One of the most precious sights that I have ever seen is that of a very aged couple, who after having been married for many years are still deeply in love with each other, and it shows. What a blessing!
A couple in their nineties are both having problems remembering things. They decide to go to the doctor for a checkup. The doctor tells them that they're physically okay, but they might want to start writing things down to help them remember.
Later that night while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair. His wife asks, "Where are you going?"
"To the kitchen," he replies.
"Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?"
"Sure."
"Don't you think you should write it down so you can remember it?" she asks.
"No, I can remember it."
"Well, I'd like some strawberries on top, too. You'd better write it down, because you know you'll forget it."
He says, "I can remember that! You want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries."
"I'd also like whipped cream. I'm certain you'll forget that, so you'd better write it down!" she retorts.
Irritated, he says, "I don't need to write it down, I can remember it! Leave me alone! Ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream — I got it, for goodness sake!" Then he grumbles into the kitchen.
After about 20 minutes the old man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of bacon and eggs. She stares at the plate for a moment and says...
"Where's my toast?"
Let’s face it, growing old is a pain! But other than the Lord returning, there aren’t many good options. But having someone, a spouse, to grow old with should be one of life’s greatest blessings. Having a hand to hold, an ear to listen, and a smile to share are the little things that make life all the better.
This will not happen by accident. Many people grow old alone because no one could bear living with them. God wants all married people to live happily with each other throughout their years together.
“Let your fountain be blessed, And rejoice with the wife of your youth.” — Proverbs 5:18 (NKJV)
And when youth has passed, men and women are to honor their commitment to each other.
“You ask, ‘Why?’ It is because the LORD sees how you treated the wife you married when you were young. You broke your promise to her, even though she was your partner and you had an agreement with her.” — Malachi 2:14 (NCV)
Christians are to be “kind and tenderhearted.” Should this not apply to husbands and wives especially? Husbands are admonished to “love your wives and be gentle with them.” (Colossians 3:19 NCV).
One of the most precious sights that I have ever seen is that of a very aged couple, who after having been married for many years are still deeply in love with each other, and it shows. What a blessing! The Bible says:
“Enjoy life with the woman whom you love all the days of your fleeting life which He has given to you under the sun; for this is your reward in life and in your toil in which you have labored under the sun.” — Ecclesiastes 9:9 (NASB)
Have a great day!
