"And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever."Daniel 2:44 · NKJV

The Kingdom That Will Never Be Destroyed

Daniel prophesied that God would establish an eternal kingdom during the days of the Roman Empire. That kingdom is the church of Christ, and it is still growing today.

There is something remarkable about standing in the middle of history and seeing it unfold exactly as God said it would. The empires of the ancient world — Babylon, Persia, Greece, Rome — did not rise and fall by accident. They rose and fell on schedule, according to a prophecy God gave to a captive young man named Daniel centuries before any of it happened.

The Empires God Named in Advance

When Nebuchadnezzar stood before that great statue in his dream, he was looking at the whole sweep of world history laid out in metal and clay. The head of gold was Babylon. The chest and arms of silver were the Persians. The belly and thighs of bronze were Greece. And then came Rome — described not even by name in the prophecy, but as something so fierce and consuming that no single image could contain it. Daniel told the king all of this. The Persians and the Greeks were even called out by name. That is not educated guessing. That is God telling the future.

And it happened exactly that way. The Persians defeated Babylon and sent the Jews home. Alexander the Great swept through the Persian Empire and carried Greek language and culture all the way to the edge of India. Then Rome encircled the entire Mediterranean world, taking Palestine in 63 BC — and it was under Roman dominion that Jesus was born.

The Stone That Became a Mountain

But Daniel did not stop at Rome. He told the king what would happen next: "In the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever." (Dan 2:44)

That stone cut without hands — that is Jesus and His kingdom. When Jesus said, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel," the mountain was beginning to grow. I am glad to be part of a kingdom that will never be destroyed. Every empire that has ever risen has fallen. This one will not.

The Kingdom Is Here Now

The Lord said His kingdom is within us — wherever there are Christians, there is part of the Lord's kingdom. When Paul crossed the Aegean Sea and preached in Macedonia and Achaia, the mountain was growing. When those seven churches of Asia Minor in the book of Revelation were standing firm under pressure from Rome, the mountain was growing. When disciples came together on the first day of the week to break bread at Troas (Acts 20:7), the mountain was growing. It is still growing today.

Daniel saw all of this from a Babylonian palace. He saw Persia, Greece, and Rome. He saw the kingdom that would outlast them all. And here we are — still part of that same kingdom.

Keep your eyes on the stone that became a mountain. Every power on earth is temporary. His kingdom is not. That is where I want to be. Don't you?
